Baubles

Thought I'd do a quick post as I've finished all the baubles and wanted to share how pretty they all are.

I ordered 50 polystyrene balls so that was my limit for how many I was gonna make. If they sell out I might order some more balls but for the moment these are all I'm going to make.

It took two weeks to cover them all in beautiful crochet. Here they are all together in their loveliness.
I love this photo but try and imagine what it took to take it, these are round, I had to arrange them on the floor and my cats wouldn't leave things alone.

A lot of these have already sold so if you want some I wouldn't hang around. You can find them here in my etsy shop

These are all the new sets that weren't shown in my last blog post.

 Watermelon.
 Traditional Christmas
 Floral
 Pumpkin
Brights - There is a pattern coming for this one and the one above coming soon. Plus these will be a free bauble pattern in the next newsletter. To sign up for the news letter see the link to join the mailing list at the top of the page.

Cath Christmas - based on Cath Kidson colours
Moorland Christmas - I'm meant to be using up yarn by making these but I ran out of the purple half way through and then ended up doing a full wool order. Not good.

 Scandi Christmas

So thats baubles for a while. Its been great fun making them, so relaxing.
I was trying to think of something else I could make to sell that wouldn't end up being too expensive. Amigurumi dolls take a long time to make and they are not very cost effective to sell. I do have some dolls available but they are made to order.

I kept thinking about a set I made for Inside Crochet a few years ago.
Of all the things I have ever made as a crafter this has been the most useful. Over the years the tape measure has gone walk about (I know they are somewhere in the house but tape measures hide from me). I never really used the pin cushion as my mum got me a lovely one thats always in use. The needle book however, I have used constantly since it came back from the magazine.

It really is the most useful thing I have. I can use the soft crocheted cover as a pin cushion is I'm on the go. I have a full selection of needles and pins inside. Admittedly mine doesn't look as neat as now as it does above. There are lots of lengths of thread still threading in needles hanging out of it and some skeins of embroidery wedged in there but it is a much loved thing.

Last year we did a handmade secret santa at Duttons work and I picked my friend Christ who does a lot of cross stitch. I decided to make her a needle book as she always commented on how nice mine was whenever she saw it.
I don't have a picture of the one I made, but she loved it. She still comments on how much she loves it and uses it all the time every-time I see here.

Got me thinking maybe I could see how long it would take to make some and maybe they'd be a good item to add to my etsy shop
I started by making a batch of five. I think they have turned out great. They are mainly made in the same style as mine but I branched out a bit with the top two and came up with some new patterns at the same time.

I have hand embroidered the Needles tags and they have vintage mother of pearl or glass buttons for the loop fastenings. Inside is felt pages that will hold many, many needles and pins.
They'll be going in my etsy shop in the next few days. I think they'll be around the £18 mark. you can contact me direct if you want to reserve one before them give me a shout at my facebook page amigurumi barmy or comment here.
I will probably make a few more of these as i have more designs I want to try out. Cherries and balloons perhaps :) defiantly not 50 though.

I'm gonna be adding a few more things to buy that are pre-made over the next week weeks.
This weekend I'm working on the next set of avengers doll patterns but that might not be released till the end of October in time for Thor Ragnarok

Thats it for today then. I'll leave you with a picture of Cal not sleeping next to me as I work.
Happy crocheting

September update

 Hi guys.
Sorry I've not posted for a while, I've had a lot on.
First up I need to postpone the giveaway. So few people have entered it and I can't make You tube content at the mo. I hope I'm not upsetting too many people. I will be doing it again at some point and if you have entered you will be automatically put in for that one. Stay tuned to this page for more details.

Here's what I've been up to.
My work is in a couple of magazines this month. You can fine my hedgehog wreath in Love Crochet magazine.

Thats not mine, thats Lucy's from Attic 24. My editor sent me this picture as inspiration for my design. She though it was mine as she recognized the hedgehogs. That is of course because Lucy used my hedgehog pattern in her wreath design.
I figured it was fine just to use the same hedgehogs again. It is mine after all. We were hoping to get three in there but they didn't fit. I also wanted to incorporate toadstools and acorns.
I had some flower and leaves patterns that I've created already in my locker and I used these as bases to design larger flowers to fill out the wreath.
I felt that if I added sunflowers it would be too close to the look of Lucy's wreath. I created the orange flowers inspired by dahlias. They look complicated but actually they are very simple and quick to make.
I thought this project would take weeks to put together but actually I managed to simplify the elements so it can be created in a couple of evenings.

I'm very happy with the finished result. I'm looking forward to getting it back from the publishers so I can have it on my wall throughout Autumn. I'm inspired to make more of these through out next year.

Next up is Lets Get crafting magazine. This month I've come up with some decorative crochet baubles. I know its getting to that time of year again when we start crocheting for Christmas.
I'm really happy with these designs. They are fun and easy to make. I'm slightly addicted to making them myself. It great for using up scraps of left over yarn. I like trying out new colour combos. I've made loads, so many that I'm gonna start selling the pre-made ones in my etsy shop
They'll be £15 for a set of three. I'll be listing them from Sunday 24th September but I have an album of them on my Facebook page where you can reserve them first.
Heres some pic of just some of the ones I've made so far.

 Peacock colours.
Coral, mint green and grey. I love these.
Jewel colours mustard, purple and bottle green.

Thats just a taster I have made loads of these. I now know the pattern by heart and have worked out some variations. Its so nice to make something pretty, relax with my cats on my knee and switch off my brain for a bit.

Aww they look so cute when they aren't fighting...  It never lasts long.

I have a few other patterns coming out for Christmas. I'm getting these together now. I know I've mentioned to extension for the nativity, that may not happen, fully this year. Its not really coming together and I'm running out of time.

I do have this pattern for a full size tasseled Stocking ready. It'll be coming out next week. Its made with a chunky yarn. If you want, you'll have plenty of time to hook up these for the whole family and fill them with more crocheted goodies, before Santa sets off on his travels.

Next up - I have released the second of the next set of Marvel characters. Bucky is ready and you can grab the pattern and make him now. Also available as a two pack with Captain America.

More of these coming very soon.

Couple of little things to finish on.
If I haven't already mentioned The kingkiller books by Pat Rothfuss are some of my favorite books. I re-read them every year and recommend them to everyone who loves a good read.
One friend loved the books so much she made me this wonderful Tak board as a thank-you gift when she left the place we worked together.
If you don't know Tak is one of the games played in the books and is now a real thing. I am really looking forward to giving it a go. I have not played yet but if anyone out there is in York and up for a game give me a shout.

As you may have guessed, I have a thing about paying homage to things I really love. They have given me so much I feel the need to give something back. This is one of the reason I started making my film character dolls. I have also made pieces to celebrate my favorite podcasts and other geeky fandoms. I'm currently working on a new set of hand-warmers that celebrate Lore podcast to replace the ones I made last year for 99pi. You can see the pic on my Twitter @lizwardcrochet

I am a massive fan on My brother, my brother and me podcast
It gives me so much joy every week. I unashamedly will sit on the bus listening, crying and shaking with laughter, and getting weird looks from the other commuters. I am currently going through the whole back catalog of shows. Only 7 years worth, shouldn't take me too long.
I love these guys so much I wanted to create something to show my adoration.
It was a bit of whim to make the dolls of themselves but I think they turned out great.
If you are also a fan of the show let me know what you think.
Lovely, lovely brothers xxx

Right thats it for this week/month. You can keep up to date with things more regularly on my Instagram, twitter, facebook and new website www.lizwardcrochet.com

Happy crocheting

Amigurumi unboxing

Hi

something a bit different today - if I can get it to work.
I got a big box of my amigurumi projects back from one of my magazines Love Crochet.
Instead of doing a big write up I did an un-boxing video. Its not edited, its a bit wobbly and the cats get way too involved, but I think its fun.

Have a watch and let me know what you think. I may do more on this line of thing in the future.

Christmas in July

I feel like a begin every blog post by explaining how busy I've been. I think its mainly cause I feel bad I don't get time to write a post as often as I'd like.

This is actually, my busiest time of the year. I'm working on Christmas projects for the crochet magazines and there are lots of people on Holiday at Duttons so I'm having to work overtime to help cover in the shop.

The above photo is of my mailing pile from last Monday. I can't share any pictures of whats in those mailing bags for a few months but lets do the maths. 3 parcels = 12 crochet commissions = 144 individual components. So thats a crochet rate of 7.2 components an hour to get all these projects done on deadline. You really don't want to see the state of my hands :(

There is some great stuff in these but they are top secret till the magazine comes out. I'll keep you posted as and when I can.

I can share some of the magazine stuff thats come out this month.

This first one is from the latest issue of lets knit magazine.
This was pretty straight forward commission they asked for a sailors cap and a boat toy. It was a interesting design and make. These were shapes that were a bit different from things I've worked on before. I started with the hat. I'd made a beret before so started that way. The rest fell into place pretty easily and I'm so pleased with the finished look.

I'm sure you can guess I went a bit idea crazy after making this one. I could make police caps, solider caps and all sorts of hats. I have nephews who love Paw patrol and they all have uniforms on, I could make hats for all of them...
Needless to say I haven't made any more yet. I still might. I really love the idea but its firmly in the "when I have time" part of my ideas bin, so it might not happen.

The boat was an idea I'd had before so it was lovely to have the excuse of a commission to work on something from my ideas bin for a change. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

I'd also like to say a huge thank you for lets knit for the amazing photos of these project. I don't want to get all political but I was so pleased to see a little girl was used. A lot of what I am ask to do for magazines seem to reinforce stereotypes and seeing a picture like this just makes my day.

Love crochet magazine have been keeping me very busy with three new projects in the latest issue and a few old favorites of mine in there aswell.

For my cheeky monkey I wanted to play around with the way I'd done monkeys in the past. Instead of adding on a face patch I used two layers to make the face shape simpler.
I also gave this monkey a bum. Sorry if you are easily offended, but most monkeys I have met do have a very obvious bottom. I decided it was time for us to have an adorable little bum on this amigurumi monkey. If you make it and it makes you giggle then I've done my job.

This project is a bit bitter-sweet for me. I love Fab lollys but I can't eat them any more. They changed the recipe and now use artificial sweeteners. I taste artificial sweeteners as bitter on my palette so they taste awful to me now. Its a hard life.
This sunglasses case is so cute. It wasn't hard to design. The imagery of a fab lolly is so iconic I couldn't really go wrong.
This is for kiddy glasses but you can make it bigger if you want an adult one. Just do a few more round of each colour.
I should defiantly make more styles in these. Woops more for the ideas bin, I'll never get it empty.

Last for Love crochet is my cactus. This is such an easy design so I went to town with the decoration. He's so cute. I weighted the pot with rice in a knot of tights fabric so it stands up lovely. Its a great, fun project. I'm hoping to see lots of variations being made by you lovely lot. Send me picture. I like getting pictures.

I'm still working on my little character dolls when I get a few spare minutes. I'm working on a Game of thrones inspired set next (if you didn't guess)
I'm not sure how big this set will be. I'd love to make them all but that might be a little bit crazy. Its just there are so many big characters that I want to make so its gonna be a lot either way. Maybe I should just commit to make them all. Maybe not.

Who saw ep 1 of season 7? I stayed up till 2am to watch it live as it went out in the US. I was so good :)
First finished doll is the wonderful moody and brooding Jon Snow. Pattern should be live in my Etsy pattern shop later today.

There will also be some collectable dolls pre-made available to buy.

Before I finish I just want to thank everyone who has visited my etsy pattern shop
Its not just people who buy my patterns that help me out, you all do. Every-time you share or favorite one of my designs it gives my little shop a real boost.
I am just me on my own here, trying to create patterns everyone will love and I couldn't carry on doing it, if it wasn't for your continued support. Thank you all so much.

Happy crocheting

June update

June has been a busy month. The weather has been lovely. I went to visit my friend in London for a little holiday. I've been working on some really fun commissions for magazines that will be released in time for Christmas.

I've also added to my growing collection of Marvel and DC characters. Deadpool, above was the character that first started me down this rabbit hole of making these designs. I wanted to make a little amigurumi of him just for me, but I got a bit stuck and in doing so I stumbled upon this lovely new pattern shape.
Deadpool got put to one side as I created the Guardians and the Avengers.  He was just waiting for ages to be put together. Now he's turned out one of my favorite of the whole group.

My plan is to make all the characters that will be in the upcoming Marvel Infinity war film so far rumored to be 32 main characters. Thankfully I've a year before the film comes out to get these made.
I had to do Doctor Strange though and I loved the Ancient one so I thought they would make a really cute duo.
You can get hold of the patterns for these two here or follow the pattern link at the top of the page.

We have a few films to go before Infinity war and the next big one will be Spider man Homecoming. I will be there opening night. I'm very excited.
I really wanted my spider man design to be super cute. I spent a lot of time working on this design to get the proportions of the eyes right. I also wondered if I should add the web over the red. In the end I decided to leave it plain. I don't think anyone is not gonna guess that is Spider man. I wanted the pattern to be simple so everyone can enjoy it. I think doing a lot of sewing just makes the pattern messy and complicated.
You can find the pattern for Spider man here

Not to forget about DC characters I released my Superman pattern last week. you can find it here
I wanted to go for a retro feel with my Superman design so I based it on the original films with Christopher Reeve. I think he turned out just adorable.
I'll be working on more of the DC characters and have Bat man and The Flash coming out soon.

In other news I'm also working on a simple set of fun classic amigurumi designs. These are made in The James C brett noodles yarn, that is perfect for learning amigurumi. I'm not sure what these characters are yet but they are super cute and really fun to make. The Orange one doesn't have a name yet. Suggestions welcome :)
The little blue one is called Dash :) patters for these and more coming soon.

I also received an advanced copy of a book project I've been involved with. I won't show pics from inside till the books been published but it's really lovely. I worked on two of the large projects in this book. Its so lovely to see the finished designs all together.

Finally I'm a bit late sharing this one and the next issue is due out shortly but this is my lovely little bride on the cover of Love crochet magazine.
I promised to make her a groom if she ever got published so I have to add that to the list.
Also in this magazine is my little hula bear that you can just see in the photo and my mermaid pattern.
If you have missed this issue I think you'll enjoy the next issue just as much. I'm hoping one of my favorite commissions to date will be on the cover.
I've also just been asked to make something I've wanted to make for ages for the Autumn issue. I'm going to be having so much fun.

Well thats all for today. I'm going to write up the next newsletter now. It'll have a free copy of the Spider man pattern in. Sign up by entering your email at the top of this page.
Signing up before 2pm GBT 30/06/2017 to get the issue of the newsletter with the free Spider man design.

I have decided that the free pattern in this issue will be my new Spider man pattern because the new Spider man Homecoming film will be coming out at the beginning of July. He is the most adorable and I'm pretty sure you are all going to love making one.

Remember you need to have signed up to the newsletter no later than 10am Friday 30th of July 2017 UK time to get the free pattern.

London baby

Hi

Really quick post. I'm just back for my little holiday in London. I had an amazing time so much so I forgot to take many photos.
My friend has recently moved to London from Geneva. I got to stay with him in his lovely flat that looks over the Thames. I could lounge on the sofa and watch the boats go by, it was wonderful.

This is now my favorite view in London.
This is the opposite of the river looking back at my friends flat. We walked under the Thames to get here.

The main reason for this post is to remind you that the next Amigurumi Clinic is this week. You can find details here

I really enjoy doing these events and meeting everyone who comes along. Hope to see some of you soon.

Told you it'd be short and sweet. Happy crocheting. Love Liz
